Noting someone else's success was what caused Henry Groen, who had been in the excavating business, to make the switch to garbage in 1947. He realized that his friends were busy year-round, while he was often idle during the winter. He won a contract to pick up garbage at Midway Airport and another to haul manure and other garbage out of the stockyards.
"We had to clean up the holding pens," said Roger Groen Sr., Henry's son and one person who probably does not lament the passing of the stockyards.

Today, Groen and his son, Roger Jr., still run Groen Waste Services in the south suburbs, but they no longer own the company. Like many such businesses, they have been bought up by a larger company-in their case, Mid-American Waste Systems of Canal Winchester, Ohio.
