Along with his two brothers, Donald Groen took over the garbage removal business that their Dutch immigrant father started and made it a thriving Southland business.
Mr. Groen sold his stake in Groen Waste Disposal before it was sold several years ago to Allied Waste Services, which operates the company as Groen Waste Management.
Mr. Groen died Monday at his Midlothian home after a three-year fight with colon cancer, his family said. He was 78.
With brothers Art and Roger, Mr. Groen was part owner of Groen Waste Disposal, which collected garbage for many Southland towns during its more than 30 years in service.
The brothers took over in the early 1960s from their father, Henry, who had been in the excavating business but switched to trash collection in 1947. His business, based in Evergreen Park, took off after he won contracts to dispose of trash at Midway Airport and to haul manure and trash from the Chicago Stockyards.
The middle son, Mr. Groen dropped out of high school to work in his father's business, Mr. Groen's son Henry said.
When the three sons began to run the company, Henry Groen and Sons became Groen Brothers Waste Disposal and later Groen Waste Disposal. The business later moved to Blue Island, and Art Groen eventually left the company, leaving its day-to-day operations to his younger brothers.
Mr. Groen was remembered as a hands-on worker, eager to get behind the wheel of a garbage truck and make pick-up runs, said Henry, who worked with his father during the 1970s.
Though more interested in working than hobbies, Mr. Groen did enjoy piloting small planes, earning a pilot's license after the company purchased a small airplane.
Ownership of the company changed hands several times before Mr. Groen sold his stake in the company to his younger brother Roger in the late 1990s. Mr. Groen continued working as an independent waste hauler and later made deliveries for a construction company.
A native of Evergreen Park, Mr. Groen and his wife, Janice, raised their five children there before moving to Midlothian in 1981. Mr. Groen was debilitated by a stroke in 2001 but fought his way back, again driving his beloved truck, his daughter Evelyn Norton said.
Mr. Groen greatly enjoyed time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter Linda died in 2005 and his wife died last year.
In addition to his son, daughter and brothers, Mr. Groen is survived by two other sons, Dennis and Leroy, 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
